I’d been looking forward to my driving experience day at Tockwith in a 911 & an Ariel Atom for some time. However I came away with mixed feelings, firstly the road into the venue was absolutely terrible, it was really only suitable for off roads vehicles & most of the cars arriving at the venue including mine were low and sporty. Booking into the venue was pretty straight forward & easy, I found all the staff courteous and helpful although there was no hand gel anywhere in sight and no social distancing taking place. When my time came to drive my first car - the 911, I was greeted by my instructor who showed me into the car & talked me through the controls, it was a Tiptronic Semi-Automatic gear box , I was told I had to keep it in full auto mode but I said I’d like to drive it in manual mode as auto didn’t appeal to me on a track, he asked if I’d ever driven a semi auto box before and I said yes, so we set off around the track. I found myself following a long queue of other cars which I was advised I could not over take. I dropped back & slipped into 2nd gear, I then put my foot down only to be told to slow down at which point I was doing 45mph. To my shock the instructor then grabbed the steering wheel and told me to stay to the right side of the track as the high speed lap car was coming through. This car was on the track nearly constantly during my visit and all other cars had to give way to it. I did eventually manage to get my foot down again & was then told to put the Porsche in auto mode as there was a noise restriction on the track. I was only allowed to go into 4th gear which was a big disappointment and not beyond 60mph. My last two laps in the Porsche were disappointing as I had to follow slower drivers around the track. That aside I thanked the driver & queued for my drive in the Atom. A young lady helped me inside, strapped me in & gave me goggles to wear. I was welcomed by my instructor & he told me about the controls which were very basic - 3 pedals, a gear stick & a steering wheel, I then discovered I wasn’t allowed to touch or change the gears. This puzzled me but I went along with it and dropped the clutch when I was told to and we set off on our first lap. Once we got into third gear the instructor said I’ll leave it in this gear for your 3 laps. I put my foot down and the power was insane, it felt great then almost immediately I was told to slow down, the instructor grabbed the steering wheel & said keep right - the high speed lap car was coming past. As with the Porsche, I couldn’t see this as all of the mirrors were positioned for the instructor to see so I was blind in relation to any cars coming from behind. The track was then clear, so the instructor allowed me to put my foot down and it felt great, but again we hit traffic so my last 2 laps were slow and unimpressive . I honestly feel that there were far too many cars on the track for any driver that day to truly experience the cars they’d paid a lot of money to enjoy. I’ve been driving over 20 years & I know how to handle a car and I certainly know how to change my own gears. I fully understand that drivers would need to be familiar with the track to build up confidence but I felt I was treated like it was my first day learning to drive a car, all be it on a race track. Much as I enjoyed getting behind the wheels of these cars I won’t be returning to the venue as I had more fun driving my mini home on the motorway and various A and B roads within the national speed limits. I would not recommend this as a driver experience. I understand the need for safety and noise restrictions but these restrictions should be made clear to customers in the information provided prior to booking the experience, that way people would know exactly what they were paying for and wouldn’t be left feeling disappointed and deflated. Cheers Alix

Overall I did enjoy the day, however I felt it could have been a lot better. On arrival I paid an additional £10 to have a 'sighting lap' this was a waste of money, I was told I would be taught the different racing lines and how best to tackle the course - I wasn't, the driver took me and another person around the track and explained what was going to happen when we got in the cars which was very obvious - wouldn't advise to get this at all. They didnt have the cars I selected so changed me into very similar cars and sang about how they were giving me a free upgrade which just was not true. In the first car the assistant driver was useless, he didnt give me any tips just told me what I was doing wrong and not how to get the best out of the experience which was very disheartening, of course I'm going to make mistakes this is my first time! The second car experience was brilliant and is the reason this is not a 1 star review, I was with Barry Lee, ex racing driving and he made the experience amazing, he was telling me what to do, where to go, how to corner correctly and I had a much better time, learning and enjoying myself. Other points - The course was incredibly short and despite them saying I had 4 miles I actually had 4 laps of a very short course which was approx 400m. - There is loads of kids driving around in the others cars so you can't actually drive fast as there is a load of 10-16 year olds driving extremely slowly around the track and overtaking was very limited. - The high speed passenger experience was great, I really enjoyed that. - They have loads of 'add ons' through the day that you can pay for which are quite expensive - £25 for 3 laps of a tiny course is extortionate I had hoped for a better experience, but I did still have a good time.
