Ambergate Motor Heritage Centre
Also known as the Ambergate Motor Heritage Centre, the Ambergate Car Museum is located at the World Heritage Site of Derwent Works in Derbyshire, overlooking the River Derwent and easily accessible from Derby, Nottingham and Mansfield.
It's unique in and of itself, as whilst the UK has a long standing reputation for great car and motor museums, the Car Museum at Ambergate offers so much more than just an exhibition of old cars, as it is also the home of the Great British Car Journey.
It's a fully immersive experience, celebrating the golden age of automotive engineering that started as far back as the 1920s, when bold new risks were being taken, and when entrepreneurs from both sides of the Atlantic - Henry Ford, William Morris and Herbert Austin - were starting a revolution that we owe our freedom of travel to today.
The cars you'll see - and also get the chance to drive here - are pioneering icons from a time when, for a solid run of around five decades, Britain really was the king of the road. So get ready to fasten your seatbelt as you prepare for a ride back in time unlike any other.
Drive Dad's Car Experiences at Ambergate
The range of "Drive Dad's Car" experience days that are on offer at the museum not only allows you the chance to see some incredible models of yesteryear up close, but to also get behind the wheel and drive them as well.
Whether it's the trusty family Austin Maestro, Ford Escort or Hillman Imp from your childhood, something more sporty like the Triumph TR7, MG Midget or the Sunbeam Rapier Convertible, or a selection of real class with the Bentley 8, Jaguar XJS or Rolls Royce, from just £49 there is the opportunity to drive as many as three of these classic motors in one go.
Of course, it may even be your Mum or Grandparents' Car, or maybe even the first car you drove as a student or that you learned to drive, but the principle remains the same; the chance for some driving time you thought had long passed that will make you more nostalgic for those halcyon days than you might expect.
Vintage and Classic Cars at Ambergate
The best thing about all the above packages as well is that there is free adult admission for you and a guest of your choice to see even more great vintage sets of wheels with the Great British Car Journey, although you can also purchase additional admission tickets in advance or on the day. On offer is a carefully curated selection of cars with real historical significance amongst petrolheads the world over.
Amongst them is a Mini dating back 55 years which has clocked up 7700 miles, and one of 360 limited edition Morris Minor Millions made back in 1961 to commemorate the incredible production figures it had clocked up to that point that was sent to every Morris dealership around the UK at that time.
A custom commissioned device is your personal tour guide over the 90 minutes it takes to complete seeing the exhibition, but you may find that exploring the hidden untold stories behind all the cars on show will be a fun day out for all the family you won't forget in a hurry.
