At Trackdays.co.uk, we are calling for more young male drivers to be cautious when out on the roads in the wake of the latest figures released by the Department for Transport (DfT) which have revealed a concerning increase in fatalities.
The latest annual provisional DfT dataset, which highlights the UK's latest road casualty and fatality numbers for the previous year (2022), revealed that 346 recorded fatalities were males aged between 17 to 29 year olds. This represented a 7% increase when compared to pre-pandemic levels (2019).
We believe more proactive measures should be taken to equip young drivers with the necessary skills to navigate UK's roads safely, and we suggest that they should continue to undertake advanced training following passing their driving test.
Dan Jones, Operations Manager at TrackDays.co.uk, says: "The increase in road fatalities among young males is deeply concerning. We want to make sure we do everything we can to help turn this around, especially after some great work done on our roads before the pandemic."
"While the initial data doesn't reveal the exact causes of the fatalities, we feel it is still a warning to younger drivers to constantly seek out safe and controlled opportunities to learn how to be a better driver once they have initially passed their test."
"However, these don't have to be packaged up as training courses. An example of this could be through following in a similar style to that of the police's high-speed performance training programme. Within it, officers are taught how to drive at fast speeds under controlled, safe conditions on a track because it helps raise overall skill and perception levels."
"The knock-on effect is that the drivers are more aware when back out on the roads, adhering to everyday road rules and conditions."
