Motorists are being warned to take extra care this Spring and be vigilant for motorcyclists and pedestrians, as the most recent official data reveals ten years of zero progress in the number admitted to hospital each year.
Indeed, 8,867 motorcyclists and 8,899 pedestrians (17,766 combined) were admitted to hospital in the 12 months ending March 2023 as a result of a transport accident, which averages 24 motorcyclists and 24 pedestrians hospitalised each day.
Moreover, with the average number of motorcyclists and pedestrians hospitalised each year over the last decade at 9,538 and 8,712 respectively it worryingly highlights a flatline in any progress, despite reductions over lockdown periods.
Dan Jones, Operations Manager for leading driver training, track day and driving experience provider, TrackDays.co.uk, is urging anyone behind the wheel this Spring to take care: "With the days getting longer in April, Spring is a time when more motorcyclists dust off their bikes and take to the roads, it is also a time where more people decide to walk than drive meaning an increased number of pedestrians."
"But motorists shouldn't take for granted that other vulnerable road users, such as motorcyclists and pedestrians, will be easier to see now the days are getting longer, and with around a quarter of all road collisions typically happening on wet or damp roads, we are urging motorists to take extra care on the roads this month as April showers are well and truly here."
