As parking at UK airports has a less than desirable reputation of being among the most expensive in the world, we are sharing our advice on how Brits can save money before jetting off this summer.
According to recent consumer reports, parking at major UK airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester can cost between £150 and £200 for a two-week stay - higher than many European rivals. In fact, Heathrow's daily charge of around £30 places it among the most expensive in the world, often adding hundreds of pounds to the cost of a family holiday.
Imran Malek, Corporate Sales Manager at Trackdays, comments: "People will happily spend hours hunting for the cheapest flights and best-value hotels, yet parking is often an afterthought. By the time it's booked, prices have usually shot up, meaning travellers pay far more than they need to."
"In some cases, last-minute parking can end up costing more than the flight itself. With just a little forward planning, families can save over £100s on parking - and that's money far better spent on actually enjoying the holiday."
1. Book early
As with many deals, the best chance of securing the lowest cost is by looking, and booking, early. Search for the lowest parking prices when the flight is booked, you'll then also know the space is guaranteed.
2. Off site
There's plenty of alternatives away from official airport parking that can be pre-booked through various parking apps.
They list off-road spaces, often within a short taxi ride or even closer, that can be found at places like hotels and nearby driveways. While they may be further from the terminal, the cost savings should make up for this.
3. Park and ride
Another option away from the airport, park and ride is usually cheaper than on-site parking. After parking, a shuttle bus then ferries passengers to and from the terminal, so it's also worth checking how frequent this is.
4. Alternatives
It could be cheaper, and more convenient, to travel to the airport another way, such as by public transport on trains and buses, or possibly by coach.
This can also make the journey more enjoyable, allowing quality time with travel companions and seeing the scenery on the way to the airport from a new perspective.
Taxis are another option and it's worth checking to see if the cost of a taxi is comparable to airport parking fees. There's also the benefit that a taxi journey will remove the stress of driving, finding the car park and then getting to the terminal.
5. Kiss and fly
Those lucky enough to have a lift should check to see if there are any drop off fees, as these vary greatly depending on the airport. It's also important to remember that overstaying the drop off time can lead to much higher costs.
Imran concludes: "Savvy holidaymakers can avoid expensive airport parking fees simply by doing some research beforehand."
"Money saved can then be spent on more pleasurable things such as an extra meal out or excursion. Of course, another way to avoid airport parking fees altogether is by holidaying in the UK and enjoying what this great county has to offer, including action packed adventures."
