Motorcycle registrations growing at a faster rate than cars - News

  • There are now 1.45 million motorcycles registered in the UK
  • This represents a 9% increase in motorcycle registrations since 2016, compared to just a 5% growth in car registrations
  • TrackDays.co.uk argues that this can be attributed to motorists tightening their purse strings amid the cost of living crisis

Motorcycle registrations are growing at an even faster rate than those for cars. That's according to research we've conducted here at TrackDays HQ.

We have analysed recent statistics from The Department for Transport (DfT), and have discovered that there are now 1.45 million motorcycles registered in the UK, including almost 150,000 new submissions in the last two years alone.

This represents a 9% increase in motorcycle registrations since 2016, compared to just a 5% growth in car registrations.

But it's not just vehicle registrations that suggest that motorcycles are gaining popularity among motorists. Indeed, the amount of motorcycle module 2 tests (the final practical on-road rest before gaining a motorcycle licence) has surged by 32% since 2020, having previously seen a decrease of 11% between 2016 and 2019.

Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk argues that the deepening cost of living crisis is the main factor fuelling such unusual trends: "Cars are of course the most common sight on Britain's roads, but the fact that motorcycle registrations are now growing at a faster rate than four-wheel vehicles, points to a very interesting change in motorists' buying behaviours."

"Cheaper maintenance and fuel costs often make motorcycles a cheaper form of transport for savvy motorists - an attractive prospect during such straitened times. This could also be a sign that the spike in motorcycle tests could continue to grow."
