All good things come to an end, and so the same is true for Caterham. They have recently confirmed that a limited edition run of their iconic Seven 310 model will be the last to feature and be powered on a Ford Sigma 1.6 litre four-cylinder engine.
Since Caterham was founded by Graham Nearn back in 1973, Ford has been the power behind these light but aerodynamic cars, as equally at home on the road as they are on track. Since 2007, Ford Sigma engines have been kitted out in all their cars, but now this powering - and thus, Caterham's long running association with Ford that started with their Crossflow car - is drawing to a close.
The run of 25 cars, which currently have a starting price tag of £39,995 on them if you've got it knocking around, will be entering production and going on sale soon in the UK, US and the UAE. As ever, the Sigma engine offers an awesome 152bhp at 7000rpm, on a power-to-weight ratio of 281bhp/tonne.
Its five speed gearbox that the engine is matched with will allow it to cruise from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, with top speeds achievable of around 127 mph. So what about its livery, then? Well, seeing as it's the final hurrah, they're reflecting this with a bold and bright selection of six colour schemes.
And here's the twist; each of them are named after different well-known pop and rock songs. There's Blue Monday (after the New Order hit of the same name), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Sir Elton John), Orange Crush (R.E.M), Back in Black (AC/DC), White Noise (Disclosure) and Green Light (Lorde), as well as the trademark body stripes that are one of Caterham's visual shorthands.
That's not all, because other upgrades available include a 620 aero nose cone, carbon fibre front wings, a gun metal finish chassis, 13" black Apollo alloy wheels, TOYO R888R tyres, black leather seats with dark grey stitching, plus a unique numbered plaque that is located behind the seats on the rear interior panel - so everyone will know it's truly one of a kind.
It's safe to say that Caterham is sending off their last Ford powered cars in style. But don't forget, with Trackdays, you've got the opportunity to drive the original Seven model with our range of Caterham Driving Experiences that are available to book at UK wide venues, from as little as £29, or for a Car Hire option for one of our own vehicle track day events.
