First launched in 1990, commencing an unbroken run of 23 years in production, the Renault Magnum is the granddaddy of the trucking world. When it comes to lorries, the Renault Magnum sits on its own pedestal high above both trucks manufactured by its rivals like Scania and DAF.
The Magnum was actually based on Renault’s prototype VE 10 truck that had been produced five years previously in 1985, and was unique in the trucking world in that it was the first of its kind to have a completely flat cab floor, and mechanically distinct cab and engine compartments.
Marcello Gandini, one of the chief designers at Lamborghini, was responsible for its design, which undoubtedly contributes to why it became as successful as it did so quickly. It is also remarkably well powered for a truck of this magnitude; the engine offers out 480 bhp, with achievable top speeds in excess of 81 mph.

As mentioned before, the Renault Magnum has a real fan following in the trucking community. An example of the speed of its success was the fact it was awarded the ‘International Truck of the Year’ award in 1991, just one year after it first hit the market.
It has also graced our TV screens, having made an appearance on BBC motoring show Top Gear, being a key vehicle in the infamous ‘Lorry Driving Challenge’ episode of the twelfth series back in 2008 between then presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.
