KEY POINTS
As the days start to stretch out again and everything starts to feel lighter and warmer weather wise, it means the return to our Track Day Calendars of some of our most popular events of the year. We are, of course, talking about our evening track day events.
And with our first such events only a matter of a few weeks away for both car drivers and bike riders alike, we've decided to argue the case for - and let you into why - these enjoyable after hours events need to be the next ones you book onto with us…
Let's be honest. The track day goer's way of life rarely - if ever - perfectly aligns up with real life commitments. Taking to the track in your own set of four or two wheels is usually something that most people can only do on their weekends, or when they get some time booked off as annual leave.
But this is where an evening track day has so many factors in its favour. The majority of them take place on midweek evenings in the spring and summer, so even if you've had a full day at work, you can take comfort in the fact that you can look forward to blowing off some steam out on track after hours.
Most evening track days will typically start at 5pm and go on until around 8pm. And it's surprising just how much fun even a three hour session is compared to doing, say, a full day out on track, that oftentimes requires the stamina of starting early in the morning and not finishing until early evening.
And a more concise session also usually means smaller numbers in attendance - which means you've not only got far more run of the track than you would on a full day, but it also attracts a much broader range of track day enthusiasts as a result.
So even with the reduced running time for your evening session, you're actually likely to get more driving time on track than you otherwise would.
One other factor that undoubtedly works to the advantage of evening track days is that they're considerably more cost effective. Make no bones about it; track day going is great fun, but it is also an expensive pastime.
Particularly as so much of the other things that need to be considered aside from entry to the event itself - your consumables, your insurance, your kit hire, your fuel - all need to be taken into account, meaning the costs can quickly add up. And, as we've seen recently, external factors means the pricing of some of these, such as fuel, is coming at more of a premium than it previously did.
But an evening track day is usually very reasonably priced - typically they start at around £99 and are usually available to book for no more than £150. So for those who perhaps can't regularly attend full daytime track events as much as they would like to, they're an ideal solution for keeping expenses down whilst still enjoying getting out on track.
It goes without saying, but the fact that evening track days take place during the warmer months should be all the incentive needed to book one.
And after such a long, damp and miserable winter cooped up indoors, with the evenings starting to stretch out for longer and the weather largely improving, getting out on track before twilight makes sense.
At the time of day when the shadows start to get long and, on clear sunny days, when there's some spectacular vistas of sunsets to enjoy across the circuit, whether it's Brands Hatch, Donington Park, Oulton Park or Snetterton, there's a different and more relaxed atmosphere to enjoy that you simply can't replicate at any other time of the year.
