Cars that were once common on the UK's roads, such as the Austin Metro, are disappearing from sight according to recent findings.
Only just over 1,000 Metros* with an MOT are believed to exist in the UK, despite more than 2 million being made between 1980 and 1998, meaning a massive 99.94% have vanished, according to research we have recently conducted here at Trackdays HQ.
Another model on the edge of extinction is the Land Rover Series 2, with just 53 left in the UK with an MOT, while the truly iconic Triumph Stag is teetering at just over 1,000 MOT'd models in the UK.
Even classic family cars that were seen on driveways across the UK are dwindling, with less than 1,000 Vauxhall Cavaliers now being driven in the UK.
Dan Jones, operations manager at TrackDays.co.uk, says: "It's sad to think that some of our most loved, and popular, cars of yesteryear are heading the same way as the dinosaurs."
"There are cars that are synonymous with the UK and conjure up images of a golden day of motoring, and we can count some of these models among them."
Other classic models with dwindling numbers are the MG Midget, with just 870 MOT'd models in the UK, while even the world-famous Ford Capri has dropped to under 2,000 MOT'd models in this country.
Dan adds: "Fewer models means there's less opportunity for classic car enthusiasts to own their dream car."
"If it's now proving beyond the reach for many to own a classic, then another option is to get behind the wheel via a driving experience on a race circuit."
"Indeed, TrackDays.co.uk recognises the importance of promoting some truly loved classics and have some of these vanishing classics available to drive."
"We hope that as many people as possible enjoy our Classic Car Driving Experiences, including our Drive Dad's Car packages at the Ambergate Car Museum in Derbyshire, which features many of the listed vehicles in our findings, if it's just for the pure driving pleasure or the chance to take a trip down memory lane."
