The most popular track day cars - News

A source of great nostalgia for millions of people around the world was having a dream supercar plastered on their bedroom wall posters, wondering if one day, by some miracle, they could drive or perhaps even own it.

With the popularity of track day experiences over the past few decades exploding, it's becoming ever more possible to take your dream cars for a spin, at a fraction of the cost.

Some of the most iconic road cars of the 20th and 21st Century are available all over the globe to test drive right now at a local circuit near you. And with TrackDays.co.uk being one of the largest and well-renowned driving experience companies in the UK, we thought it would be appropriate to take you through some of the great track day heroes of today.

  • Renault Clio

Perhaps not a dream car for many, but this French classic is the ideal run around on tracks up and down the country. With an ideal power to weight ratio, nimble handling and a relatively low running cost, the Renault Clio should be right at the summit of anyone's list when looking for an ideal track day car.

  • Caterham Seven

If you want a kit car that has seemingly endless levels of grip and power, you can't look much further than the immensely impressive Caterham Seven. Now a common staple on track days all around the British Isles, this super-lightweight sports car has been fulfilling road users' adrenaline rushes globally for the last five decades.

  • Mazda MX-5

Japan has given so much to the automotive industry in the last century, but arguably their greatest and most accessible achievement was the birth of the Mazda MX-5. With the two-seater sports roadster becoming ever more popular in 1980's culture around the world, Mazda looked to enter the market with something that would define a generation of road-trippers, circuit racers and families alike.

  • Porsche 911

Perhaps one of the most iconic brands in automotive history, Porsche certainly has a way of letting you know what you're driving. And, in 1964, the giant car maker from Stuttgart would change the world forever with the dawn of the iconic 911 model.

And, with many competitors still using front-engine methods for their fleet of supercars, it was Porsche that broke the mould, creating a rear-engine model that's still in wide use to this day.

  • Ariel Atom

Built in the same ilk as the previously mentioned Caterham Seven, the Ariel Atom, which is built in Somerset, England from a small company of thirty employees, steps it up a notch. With an exposed skeletal chassis mounted with a 320hp Honda Civic engine, this 600kg rocket is the perfect concoction of crazy and enjoyable that's required to have the best track day imaginable.

  • Radical SR3
If you were ever looking to experience the thrills of driving an open top prototype on the roads and on the track, then look no further than the Radical SR3.

Being the most popular model ever made by the British manufacturer, its lightweight frame and mid-mounted motorcycle engine make it one of the more unique entries on this list.

But, at a relatively low cost compared to other road legal 'racing cars', the SR3 truly is a machine that needs to be experienced at a circuit near you.
