This is your chance to experience a unique and one-of-a-kind military flight simulator session in a real former Army Westland Lynx helicopter! You’ll get the opportunity to take off, hover and cruise just like you would in the real thing - all without ever leaving the ground. Situated at a site near RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, the simulator is run and operated by Kenneth Mockford, a former SAAF airman, who is now passionate about recreating the feel of flying and piloting these helicopters as realistically as possible. This Lynx helicopter, built in 1978, was actually used by the Army Air Corps (you can have a look for yourself at images of it when it was in service by searching for its registration - XZ195 Lynx) as well as the 655 Squadron in Northern Ireland - so little surprise that it was a common sight over that area during the Troubles, but also in the Falklands War. NATO intervention in Kosovo and Iraq. Its last serving was in the 672 Squadron at Dishforth before it was discontinued and broken up for spares. Kenneth’s efforts are thus a real labour of love that he has rebuilt into a fully working simulator. It includes many of the functions and systems that were in the real thing when it was in service (although understandably, not all are, due to being a closely guarded military secret). Regardless, over your 60 minute session, you’ll soon discover how powerful and fleet-footed these choppers really are, and once harnessed in the pilot seat with a working headphone intercom set, you’ll feel like you’re piloting the Lynx for real!
