Steam and Diesel Train Trips
There are few days out that have retained such a timeless appeal throughout the generations as that of taking a trip on an authentic steam or diesel engine hauled train.
And we are proud to offer the chance to climb aboard for some incredible trips setting off from some of the finest preservation railways in the country, that will offer you the opportunity to step into a bygone world of exploration and discovery.
The Golden Age of Steam
Nothing is quite so atmospheric and captivating as revisiting the age of steam train travel. In fact, the likes of Agatha Christie's Murder On The Orient Express, Edith Nesbit's The Railway Children or even A Brief Encounter have bought an air of mystique and sepia toned nostalgia to when steam locomotives coursed along the railway lines of Great Britain.
And because the heritage railways where they are hosted from are all run by dedicated teams of enthusiasts and volunteers (with the vast majority also relying on donations to keep the railway running), they are passionate about making the trip as authentic as possible, working tirelessly year after year to ensure that not only the engines are in the best working condition possible, but that the stations and lines they inhabit are too.
Almost certainly, when you arrive at the station, you're sure to take in the lovingly restored buildings, from the booking hall to the signal box, to the carriage sheds and workshops where the engines are maintained and oiled up for a good long run.
If you fancy pulling on your overalls and getting involved with driving a steam train yourself, you can visit our Steam Train Driving Experiences page to browse and book from available packages.
Where Can I Go On A Steam Train Ride?
A wide selection of vintage preserved railways are available to take a trip from. These include the Kent and East Sussex Railway, which reopened as a heritage line in the early 1970s, and over the last 50 years, has gradually extended to a superb track running at 21 miles long between Tenterden in Kent and Bodiam in East Sussex.
Departing from a number of stations, including London, Carlisle, Bristol and Liverpool amongst others, is the Northern Belle train, which offers day trips, as well as fine dining and afternoon tea trains. But boarding one of the stunning and intricately designed coaches that are evocative of the "Belle Époque" era of the 1930s, with every detail paid attention to, will be as much of an experience as the trip itself!
You can explore the Jurassic Coast of Dorset by both a steam train on the Swanage Railway, and disembark to enjoy a boat cruise and sightseeing expedition, taking in the sun, sea and sights of the pretty Victorian seaside town of Swanage, and explore the ruins of Corfe Castle or Purbeck Museum.
