First in production from 1981, the DMC-12 was the DeLorean motor company’s only major sports car for the US market. Well noted for its broad design and iconic ‘gull wing’ style doors, there is of course one thing that this now iconic model is known for which we’ll come to in due course.
However, the DMC-12 proved a tough sell in all senses of the word. With a 2849cc engine pumping 130 bhp, a top speed of 130 mph, and acceleration from 0 - 60 mph in 8.3 seconds, compared to other similar cars of the time it wasn’t exactly a speed demon.
It was this, plus many other contributing factors that led to DeLorean being shuttered altogether after it went into liquidation in 1982, with only 9,000 of the original DMC-12 models ever being produced.
