It’s chocks away (well, not literally!) as you too can feel the need for speed at Abingdon Airfield, a former RAF base in Oxfordshire. Unsurprisingly, its long runway offers the ultimate long straight, plus there’s plenty of run-off space if needed.
Opening under Commander Roberts on September 1st, 1932, RAF Abington served as the take-off point for the first solo East to West crossing of the Atlantic by a Woman, as Beryl Markham flew a Vega Gull westwards in September 1936. Initially, the station's military role focused on training for Bomber Command, with 10 Operational Training Unit (OTU) operating mainly Armstrong Whitworth Whitley Bombers. Post-war, it became part of Transport Command, hosting Douglas DC-3 Dakotas from 1946, later replaced by Avro Yorks. The station's aircraft were notably involved in the 1948 Berlin Airlift.
Abingdon, nestled in the heart of Oxfordshire, is a treasure trove of sights for those seeking a memorable stay. From the captivating County Hall museum to the storied Abbey Buildings, the town is steeped in history and rural charm. With its claim to fame as possibly the oldest town in England, Abingdon boasts a rich heritage dating back to a neolithic settlement. Archaeological finds trace the town's evolution over a millennia, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.
Whilst there are limited facilities on the airfield including a burger van, portable toilets and an awning for shelter, there are plenty of fantastic Bed and Breakfasts and Hotels available in the local area that are not from the airfield which you can book into to stay overnight if you're travelling from outside the area. You are advised to use the main airfield entrance off Barrow Road when attending for event days.
