This course teaches you how to navigate the old-school way—using physical OS maps and a compass to find your way. Setting off in small groups, your expert guide will show you how to read a map, plan the best routes, and use essential tools like route cards, pace cards, and, of course, your trusty compass. Along the way, you’ll also gain valuable insights into hiking safety, route planning, and key landmarks to look out for in vast, open landscapes like the Marlborough Downs. - Navigation equipment such as weatherproof OS maps, route cards, pacing card and compass will be provided
- You may join a group of up to 6 participants
Skills you will gain on this course include:
- How to use 1:25000 OS maps, grid references, Romer Scales and other key navigation features
- Expert instructors will teach you about handrailing, rights of way, how to use route cards, pacing cards and a compass to set the map and orient yourself
Suitable For
- Minimum age 18
- All participants must be able to walk on rough terrain unassisted for up to 5 hours
Availability
- Available throughout the year, subject to availability
- Sessions start at 9:30 and finish at 15:30
- The course will be postponed if wind speeds of 40mph+ are predicted, snow and ice are present, and lightening is forecast
