Start your flying journey today with this lesson in a sporty microlight near Grantham. If you’re a fan of history and like to learn bits about Britain’s aviation past, you’re in for a treat. Saltby Airfield was used as a USAF (United States Air Force) base throughout World War 2, and as soon as you step onto its ground you can't help but soak up the sense of history that has been and gone through the skies. With a rich history behind it, today this airfield is used for recreational flying lessons and is known for its rural views over the Rutland Water and Vale of Belvoir. If you’re wanting to take a flying lesson to learn how to fly, or simply want to appreciate the stunning scenery between Melton Mowbray and Grantham you’re in the right place. The two seater Ikarus C42 is a perfect plane for beginners to learn in and also possesses a heated cabin for those chilly winter days. Alongside a trained instructor, you’ll be given the chance to learn the basics and even complete some aerial exercises if you’re feeling adventurous. Small friendly airfield. Able to help ourselves to tea and coffee. My mother and wife were taken to the control bus so they could see the comings and goings of the aircraft whilst I was flying. My pilot, Paddy, was extremely informative, helpful and polite. His enthusiasm for taking people out in his aircraft was evident. He loved his job, and loved sharing his aircraft. He very soon had me at the controls, and was calm and confident about my efforts to keep the aircraft airborne. He allowed me to keep control of the aircraft for most of the hour. A good day out, and a good experience.

Absolutely fantastic We recently bought our son a surprise one hour flying experience in a Light Sport Aircraft to celebrate his 50th birthday and it turned out to be the best present we could have given him. It was far more than just a quick flip around the local countryside and a hand shake. We first met with the pilotowner of the aircraft in the clubhouse where our son was taken aside and given a good half hours lecture on all the safety aspects of what he was about to experience, plus the theory side of flying an aircraft. He then accompanied the pilot to the hangars where he was given a handson talk on the mechanics of the craft, even helping to wheel it out onto the apron and making ready for takeoff. Then came the best bit when he was finally airborne and receiving flying instructions, including taking control, guided by a man who obviously loved flying, and also his superb little plane. During the flight, there was the added bonus of passing over some glorious countryside and landmarks, including Belvoir Castle, and the weather could not have been kinder. Although it was billed as a onehour event, the whole experience lasted far beyond that time, and our son has not stopped talking about it yet. So, it was definitely a great success as far as we were concerned.
