Track Days are for drivers and riders to test the speed and handling abilities of their own vehicles in a safe and controlled environment away from the public roads. They take place all year round on famous Circuits and Airfield Tracks across the UK and Europe, and are suitable for complete novices to professional racers.

Arrival and Sign-on

On the day you arrive at the circuit at approx. 8:00am. Once there you will be directed to registration/signing on, here you will sign all relevant paperwork and display to the organiser or circuit your full UK driving license (and confirmation document if you have one). You will be given a sticker(s) to display on your vehicle; this will indicate your ability group. After you have registered you must attend a mandatory driver/rider briefing (depending on type of day) this normally lasts about 30 minutes. Here you will be briefed on how the day is going to run, track etiquette, circuit training and any other information relevant to the day.

Signing on at Track Days
'Session' Trackdays

On a typical session track day all attendees will be split up into one of three groups; novice (first timers), intermediate and advanced depending on track experience. You should nominate your ability group when booking your track day. The circuit opens with the first session at 9:00am with the advanced group for 20 minutes, followed by the intermediate group for 20 minutes and then the novice group for 20 minutes. This rotation will repeat up until 1:00pm when the circuit closes for lunch. A 1-hour break is taken; circuit snack bars and restaurants are open for food and refreshments. The circuit re-opens for the first afternoon session at 2:00pm with the advance group, the intermediate group at 2:20pm and then finally the novice group at 2:40pm. Again this rotation will repeat up until 5:00pm when the circuit closes for the day. You should receive 7 x 20 minute sessions in total.

On Track
'Open pit-lane' Trackdays

'Open Pit Lane' basically means un-sessioned. The signing on procedure still applies, but instead of all attendees being split up into 3 ability groups, they are mixed with unlimited track time on a queuing system. The circuit opens at 9:00am for open lapping, closes at 1:00pm for lunch, re-opens at 2:00pm and then finally closes at 5:00pm. You can come on and off the track as often as you please; it is advised and expected for each driver/rider to take appropriate breaks during the course of the day. Obviously vehicle wear and tear and driver/rider fatigue is higher on a track day like this. Splitting the day up and taking regular breaks is strongly advised.

During the course of both types of day instruction is normally available from qualified ARD's licensed instructors. Extra instruction can be booked at registration with the organiser. Track days are normally mid week with the occasional weekend date. This is because race meetings and other circuit activities are normally operational at the weekends. Track days are normally operated during the day, but there are a selection of evening track days. These normally start at 5:00pm and run through to 8:00pm depending on light. The evening track days are normally limited in numbers, with either just 2 sessions or an open pit lane.
