If you are new to sailing it can sometimes be a nightmare as there are so many terms that are designed to stop confusion but in actual fact can cause more confusion to the untrained. We have compiled a list of some of the most commonly used terms that you might come across on a sailing activity day.
- Bow: The bow refers to the front of the boat
- Aft: Aft is the back of a ship
- Starboard: Starboard is used to describe the right side of the boat when facing the Bow.
- Port: Port or portside is used to describe the left-hand side of the boat when facing the Bow.
- Rudder: The rudder is located at the aft beneath the boat. It is used to steer the ship.
