French automotive firm Renault’s ‘Renaultsport’ high performance division first produced the Renaultsport Clio hot hatch car back in 1998, a version of their highly popular Renault Clio supermini that is now into its fifth generation of production as a road vehicle.
This particular variant, the Renaultsport Clio Trophy 200, was first introduced in 2009. Its prior variant, the Clio Trophy 197, had been disappointingly received, but further modifications and enhancements - amongst them, a front splitter and fine tuning of the exhaust system - improved its performance considerably.
And some performance it turns in too; the 2.0 litre 4 cylinder in-line engine on this front-wheel drive sports car offers out an impressive 197 bhp, helping it to accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, reaching top speeds in excess of 150 mph.
Cool Facts About the Renaultsport Clio Trophy
As mentioned above, the Renaultsport Clio Trophy 200 was widely regarded as a return to form for Renault, and even now is a universal favourite of track day enthusiasts and hatchback fans alike.
In their original review on its launch in 2009, EVO magazine stated that “it is by far
[their] most serious attempt to address the early criticisms levelled at the 197 and move the hottest Clio into the zone that made more heavily-evolved editions of the previous generation of Clio so magical …
[it is] ... more alert and urgent … a real junior road racer.”
