The Mobile Bat Car actually started life as the Futura Concept Car in 1955, promoted by Ford's Lincoln brand, and designed by their lead stylists Bill Schmidt and John Najjar. It was first showcased at the Chicago Auto Show in January 1955.
But despite finding success as a show car, it was to be another 10 years (several of which were under the ownership of auto customiser George Barris, where it sat forgotten and dilapidating behind his shop after the $250,000 car was sold to him for $1) before fame of a different kind came calling.
In 1965, TV executive William Dozier approached Barris to design the 'Super Hero' car for a new Batman TV series. With just a three week turnaround to get it ready, he completed work on the now iconic 'Batmobile' in time for the start of series production in October of that year. Insured for $125,000, the car first appeared with the debut of the Batman series on US television in January 1966.
